Article Types

American Journal of Trade & Policy offers multiple article types to maximize your options for disseminating policy-related works. Only article types that appear in the drop-down menu during the submission process are available for submission to the selected section.

Please ensure that any manuscript you submit to the American Journal of Trade & Policy conforms to the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) recommendations for ethics, as well as to the journal requirements. All submitted manuscripts will be checked using plagiarism-detection software.

All scholarly research and review articles published in the journal undergo editorial evaluation and peer review procedures appropriate to the article category, receive a DOI, are citable, are published in PDF format, and may be indexed in relevant scholarly databases and discovery platforms.

1. Research Articles 

Research Articles present original scholarly research, empirical analysis, theoretical discussion, and policy-oriented investigations relevant to trade, governance, economics, public policy, and related interdisciplinary fields.

Original Research articles are peer-reviewed, have a maximum word count of 6,000, and may contain no more than 10 figures and tables.

An Article Processing Charge (APC) applies upon acceptance for publication.

Typical first editorial decision: within 60 days

Citation Style: APA

Original Research Articles are generally expected to include: 1) Abstract, 2) Introduction, 3) Methodology / Research Methods, 4) Results, 5) Discussion.

2. Policy and Practice Reviews

Policy & Practice Reviews provide comprehensive coverage and a balanced overview of current and relevant topics in policy, regulations, and guidelines from academia, societies, regulatory bodies, industries, and other sources.

In contrast to Policy Briefs, this article type provides authors with more space to elaborate on policies and/or guidelines.

Policy & Practice Reviews are peer-reviewed, have a maximum word count of 5,000, and may contain no more than 8 figures and tables.

An Article Processing Charge (APC) applies upon acceptance for publication.

Typical first editorial decision: within 60 days

Citation Style: APA

Policy & Practice Reviews should have the following format: 1) Abstract, 2) Introduction, 3) Sections on assessment of policy/guidelines options and implications, 4) Actionable Recommendations, 5) Discussion.

3. Law Reviews

Law Review articles provide analytical, critical, and scholarly discussions on legal issues, trade regulation, public policy, international law, governance, and related interdisciplinary topics.

All Law Review submissions are subject to editorial screening prior to publication, have a maximum word count of 20,000, and may contain no more than 15 figures and tables.

Law Review articles provide analytical, critical, and scholarly discussions on legal issues, trade regulation, public policy, international law, governance, and related interdisciplinary topics.

Comparative legal analysis, doctrinal analysis, and policy-oriented legal scholarship are encouraged.

No APC is charged for accepted Law Review articles. Authors are not required to pay any fees to publish.

Typical first editorial decision: within 30 days

Citation Style: Footnote Format

Law Review articles are generally expected to include: 1) Abstract, 2) Introduction, 3) Legal and Policy Analysis, 4) Comparative or Doctrinal Discussion (where applicable), 5) Findings or Critical Discussion, and 6) Conclusion. Citations and references should follow appropriate legal citation and footnote standards.
